The world of South Camden and far beyond changed yesterday with the passing of Father Michael Doyle.
His friendship with Nick Virgilio sparked a movement to create, in 1989, a living memorial to Nick, his legacy as a breakthrough English language haiku poet, and a dedicated teacher of the genre - The Nick Virgilio Haiku Association.
He was a friend and mentor to many, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, source of the vision for the Heart of Camden Housing Corporation and the Waterfront South Arts District (“Art Will Save Us.”)
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Father Doyle who was a founding board member and provided the impetus for the purchase and renovation of our Writers House across the street from the Church.
We are committed to keeping Father Michael’s vision alive and flourishing. May he rest In Peace.
-Henry Brann, board member and former president of the Nick Virgilio Haiku Association.
